Ashley Carole Burbee was a young woman with a promising future. Her love for music was seen when she played her trumpet in the symphonic orchestra, and concert, pep, and marching bands. She loved the water and dreamed of becoming a dolphin trainer some day. In her Senior year, Ashley joined the Portage High School Girls Swim Team, which led to a job as a swim instructor at the Portage Twp. YMCA, and later became the Y’s head lifeguard. Ashley loved teaching young people and adults how to swim. Heartbreakingly her love and dreams were cut short when her life was lost in an automobile accident November 8, 2011.
Ashley’s parents along with their spouses, Ron and Sue Burbee and Mary and Jeff Liggett created the Ashley Carole Burbee Memorial Scholarship Fund (Fund). The Fund will be disbursed to the Portage Twp. YMCA through the Porter County Community Foundation and will be used for children of low income families to receive swim lessons in the Y’s three beginner classes, plus a temporary membership to the Y so they can participate in the pool’s open swim sessions to practice what they’ve learned. Through this Fund Ashley’s spirit will live on, as children come to love the water as much as she did. We’re positive Ashley is smiling : )
